DefiLlama snapshot: Solana’s fees top Ethereum’s, but a smaller share is burned

Sept. 22 data shows Solana’s 30‑day fees at $23.58m vs Ethereum’s $12.04m, while Solana’s burn share is roughly half of Ethereum’s—highlighting how fee mechanics, not just totals, drive tokenholder accrual.

Solana generated more user fees than Ethereum in DefiLlama’s Sept. 22 dashboard snapshot, but Ethereum burned more of what users spent—especially on the day measured. DefiLlama’s overview showed Solana with about $1.10 million in 24‑hour chain fees versus Ethereum’s $649,423, while reported burns were $117,138 for Solana and $226,298 for Ethereum. Over 30 days, Solana’s chain fees totaled $23.58 million compared with Ethereum’s $12.04 million; reported burns were $2.66 million for Solana and $2.80 million for Ethereum.

Evidence and calculations:
– 24h fees/burns (DefiLlama): Solana ≈ $1.10m / $117,138; Ethereum $649,423 / $226,298. Calculation: burn/fee ≈ 11% for Solana and ≈ 35% for Ethereum.
– 30d fees/burns (DefiLlama): Solana $23.58m / $2.66m; Ethereum $12.04m / $2.80m. Calculation: burn/fee ≈ 11% for Solana ($2.66m ÷ $23.58m) and ≈ 23% for Ethereum ($2.80m ÷ $12.04m).
– 7d aggregates also favored Solana on fees ($5.93m vs $3.09m), while burns were closer ($698,884 vs $761,849).

Mechanism: why fee totals and burns diverge

Under Solana’s rules, the base charge is 5,000 lamports per signature; half of that base fee is burned and half goes to the block‑producing validator. Validators also receive all priority fees. A higher share of priority fees therefore boosts validator income without increasing the burn.

Ethereum burns execution base fees, while priority tips go to validators. DefiLlama’s Ethereum adapter also includes blob fees in both total fees and reported burns. Two chains can thus show similar user spending but produce different supply impacts depending on the mix of base vs priority (and blob) fees.

Implication: headline “fees” are not a clean proxy for tokenholder accrual. For holders, burns (and issuance) drive supply reduction; for validators and stakers, the relevant figure is what portion of fees routes to them.

Limitations

DefiLlama notes synchronization limits: exact window endpoints were not disclosed, and Ethereum’s shared revenue table showed a slightly different daily burn ($229,846) than the overview ($226,298). The Solana adapter estimates base fees by multiplying transaction count by 5,000 lamports, while the protocol charges by signature, introducing estimation risk. Aggregate leadership over 7 or 30 days does not imply leadership on every individual day.

What to watch next

– Fee composition: the share of Solana fees that are priority (validator‑directed) vs base (partly burned).
– Net dilution: issuance and how validator income is shared with stakers, which determine holder and staker economics beyond burns.
– Data fidelity: reconciliation of adapter methodologies and consistent daily burn figures across DefiLlama’s tables.
– Persistence: whether Solana’s fee leadership and the burn‑share gap persist in synchronized, longer windows.

🧠 HafidWatch Take

The core signal isn’t that Solana “beat” Ethereum in fees—it’s that fee composition drives who benefits. Our calculations show Solana burned roughly 11% of 30-day fees versus Ethereum’s ~23%, a gap consistent with Solana routing priority fees to validators while Ethereum burns execution base fees (with tips to validators). For tokenholders, burn share and issuance matter more than headline fee totals. The missing piece is fee mix detail by chain; if Solana’s priority share remains elevated, validator payouts can rise without commensurate holder accrual.
