Spot taker flow flipped to net buying and realized cap’s monthly change rose above its high band, even as open interest, funding and realized profit-taking remained elevated.
Bitcoin’s 11.65% weekly rebound now carries evidence of real spot and on-chain participation, according to Glassnode, broadening a move that began with heavy short-covering.
During EU trading hours on Sept. 22, CryptoSlate market data placed Bitcoin at $85,877. In its latest snapshot, Glassnode said the asset had risen more than 10% from the previous Sunday’s close and moved above $80,000 for the first time in nearly two weeks.
Glassnode identified two shifts that point to willing buyers beyond those forced to cover. First, exchange spot taker flow flipped from net selling to net buying as volume increased, indicating more aggressive spot purchases at available prices. Second, the monthly change in realized capitalization moved above its high band, showing coins being repriced on-chain at higher levels—an on-chain valuation signal rather than a literal measure of dollar inflows.
The initial break above $85,000 had a large mechanical component. CryptoSlate reported on Sept. 21 that CoinGlass data showed more than $648 million of crypto short positions were liquidated as prices rose, forcing traders to buy back and adding momentum. Forced buying eventually exhausts as weak shorts are cleared, leaving the durability question: would spot demand remain once the squeeze faded?
Participation broadened in derivatives as well: perpetual taker flow swung from heavy net selling to net buying. But Glassnode also flagged a new vulnerability—futures open interest, funding and realized profit-taking all sat above its historical bands. That combination implies elevated leverage and more active distribution by profitable holders.
Why it matters
The next phase likely depends on a simple market plumbing test: can spot participation absorb both leveraged positioning and increased selling from holders in profit? If spot net buying with rising volume persists while funding and open interest normalize, the rally can digest leverage. If spot demand fades first, elevated positioning and profit-taking become headwinds.

Limitations
Realized capitalization is an on-chain repricing metric; it does not identify buyer types or track cash inflows. The data cited does not break out venue- or instrument-level spot flows beyond taker balance, and it does not show how liquidations split between BTC and other assets.
What to watch next
– Persistence of exchange spot taker net buying alongside higher volume
– Normalization in funding rates and open interest without price slippage
– Intensity of realized profit-taking as price tests recent highs

🧠 HafidWatch Take
Glassnode’s data indicates that exchange spot taker flow has shifted to net buying, accompanied by a notable rise in realized capitalization, suggesting genuine spot and on-chain support beyond the initial $648 million short squeeze. However, leverage metrics like open interest and funding rates, along with realized profit-taking, remain elevated. The critical factor will be whether spot demand continues to absorb leverage and profit-taking or whether excess positioning unwinds. Sustained spot net buying with rising volume and normalized funding rates would signal the market is digesting leverage rather than being driven by it, indicating a more durable rally.
