Fed data show a $148B Treasury cash increase drained $115B of bank reserves, yet overnight rates stayed anchored—removing one potential stress point as BTC rebounded.

Large tax-date cash inflows lifted the Treasury’s account without knocking overnight markets out of the Federal Reserve’s orbit—and Bitcoin rallied alongside.

According to Federal Reserve data, the Treasury General Account rose by $148.003 billion through Sept. 16 to $991.708 billion as tax payments moved cash into the government’s account. Over the same period, deposits held by commercial banks at the Fed fell by $114.971 billion to $2.922 trillion. By calculation, the $33.032 billion gap between the TGA build and the reserve decline indicates the increase did not translate into a one-for-one reserve drain, consistent with other balance-sheet flows offsetting part of the move.

Funding remained orderly. The Secured Overnight Financing Rate printed at 3.85% on Sept. 17 across almost $3 trillion of transactions—five basis points below the Fed’s 3.90% interest rate on reserve balances. Trading clustered around policy settings: the 25th and 75th percentiles were 3.83% and 3.90%, and even the 99th percentile reached only 3.93%, seven basis points below the Fed’s 4% standing repo facility rate.

Mechanically, tax-date TGA builds pull cash from private balances and can tighten the pool of reserves, risking a jump in short-term rates. The observed prints suggest repo markets absorbed the shock. The Fed raised its benchmark interest-rate range by 25 basis points to 3.75%–4.00% on Sept. 16; SOFR rose 23 basis points from 3.62% after the policy change took effect, a move consistent with scheduled repricing while leaving room that tax-driven cash demand added marginal pressure.

The absence of a wider funding squeeze removed one potential source of stress for risk assets as Bitcoin recovered from a pullback. During the period, Bitcoin rose from about $76,147 to more than $80,000 and was around $82,000 at press time, according to CryptoSlate data. This is a correlation, not a causal claim.

Limitations: The funding snapshot covers a narrow window, and the facility-level drivers of the reserve/TGA gap are not specified in the data presented. A single day of SOFR stability does not preclude future tightness if drains persist.

What to watch next: whether SOFR consistently trades below the 3.90% reserve rate with tight dispersion; any approach toward the 4% repo backstop; the path of TGA and reserve balances as tax flows settle; and facility-level usage that would reveal which balance-sheet channels are absorbing the moves.

🧠 HafidWatch Take

The $148 billion Treasury cash build on tax day did not push SOFR beyond the Fed’s interest rate corridor, indicating that balance-sheet drains were absorbed without triggering broad funding stress. For cryptocurrencies, this lessens the risk of a sudden liquidity squeeze causing deleveraging, with policy rate moves continuing to have a larger impact on prices. Key indicators to monitor include whether SOFR stays below the 3.90% reserve rate with tight dispersion and if it approaches the 4% repo backstop, which would signal a significant shift in market conditions.
