Early payoff removes secured debt and unlocks crypto collateral as Riot leans into AI-focused data centers.
Riot Platforms has repaid a $200 million credit facility from Coinbase Credit, releasing pledged Bitcoin, USDC and cash that were held at Coinbase Custody Trust Company, according to an SEC filing. The company said the remaining principal and interest were paid in full and no early termination fees or penalties were incurred.
Why it matters: paying down a secured line immediately frees encumbered assets and cuts interest expense, giving Riot more balance-sheet flexibility. With more of its BTC and cash unencumbered, the miner has additional optionality for operations, hedging, or funding growth without adding secured claims on its assets.
Riot has been expanding beyond mining into data-center and AI hosting. Cointelegraph reported in August that the company signed a 20-year agreement to supply 191 megawatts from its Rockdale, Texas, campus to a leading AI customer. Bloomberg later reported, citing people familiar, that the customer is Anthropic and valued the deal at about $9 billion.
On the financial side, Cointelegraph reported in May that Riot posted $167.2 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2026, with $33.2 million from its newly launched data-center business. That split implies roughly 20% of revenue came from data centers (our calculation: $33.2 million ÷ $167.2 million ≈ 19.9%).
Limitations
The filing details referenced do not specify the facility’s interest rate or the exact size of the released collateral, so the immediate earnings impact cannot be quantified here. Bloomberg’s identification of Anthropic and the ~$9 billion value are not issuer-confirmed. It is also unclear whether Riot intends to put new credit in place after this repayment.

What to watch next
- Upcoming SEC filings for updated balances of unencumbered BTC/USDC and any new financing arrangements.
- Utilization and revenue ramp of Rockdale’s 191MW commitment and any additional hosting contracts.
- Revenue mix shifts between mining and data centers as capex is deployed and contracts turn on.

🧠 HafidWatch Take
Riot’s early repayment of a $200 million secured line simplifies its balance sheet and frees up crypto and cash collateral, providing valuable liquidity as it expands its capital-intensive data-center operations. This move signals a strategic shift toward prioritizing hosting economics alongside mining activity. The key indicators to monitor will be the growth in data-center revenue relative to mining and the levels of unencumbered BTC reported in upcoming SEC filings. Details on interest savings and any new financing arrangements have not been disclosed, but would offer clearer insight into the margin effects of this transition.
