BEA’s softer PCE print arrived alongside methodology tweaks, while CME FedWatch odds barely moved; Glassnode says low futures OI reduces squeeze risk as CoinGlass maps nearby liquidation pockets.

Bitcoin erased an initial pop from a softer U.S. inflation print and remained capped below $86,000, with Coinbase data showing BTC/USD roughly flat on the day and holding above $83,000 after reversing near $85,600.

The move followed the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ latest Personal Consumption Expenditures report. Headline PCE rose 3.4% year over year in August, versus expectations of 3.7%, while core PCE increased 3.0%, the BEA said. The release also incorporated methodology changes affecting categories including portfolio management, software and accessories, and legal services.

Macro print muddied by methodology

The Kobeissi Letter estimated the methodology alone could reduce core PCE by up to 20 basis points and noted that July headline and core figures were revised down by 30 bps. Kobeissi suggested markets would discount the August read. CME Group’s FedWatch tool showed the implied probability of a quarter-point hike at the October FOMC at about 37% on Wednesday, little changed — a sign the print did not meaningfully shift rate expectations.

Despite the fade after the release, Bitcoin’s backdrop improved over the quarter. CoinGlass data put Q3 returns at 42.7%, the strongest third quarter since 2017.

Leverage lightens, reducing squeeze risk

Positioning has thinned even as prices advanced. Glassnode said falling futures open interest has pushed leverage down to the lowest level since March, which can make rallies and pullbacks less vulnerable to forced liquidations.

CoinGlass’s liquidation heatmap shows near-term pockets above and below spot, including a new cluster of roughly $60 million near $83,000. That sits close to levels traders are watching on the downside, while Wednesday’s intraday high around $85,600 remains nearby resistance.

What to watch next

Two signals stand out: whether futures open interest rebuilds and whether price can sustain a break above the $85,600 area. A rebuild in OI without upward progress would raise the risk of squeezes returning; continued thin OI would leave spot flows as the primary driver around nearby liquidation pockets identified by CoinGlass.

🧠 HafidWatch Take

The current low level of futures open interest means leverage has diminished enough to significantly reduce the risk of sharp forced liquidations, making price movements more reliant on genuine spot demand. However, even with thin positioning, sudden shifts in microstructure or large spot flows could still trigger volatility near key levels like $83,000 and $85,600. Thus, while leverage drain lowers squeeze risk, it does not eliminate the possibility of abrupt price swings driven by concentrated spot activity or unexpected market reactions.
